"Why can't I turn on 'Inventory Tracking' for this item?"

Symptoms

When editing an inventory item, the "Inventory Tracked" field appears grayed out and cannot be activated.

Resolution Steps

  1. Delete the inventory item.
  2. Re-add the inventory item and enable "Inventory Tracked".

Cause (Optional)

There are multiple reasons why "Inventory Tracked" field can be disabled from editing:

  • The inventory item was imported from QuickBooks Online (QBO), with the "Inventory Tracked" option enabled by default.  As a result, inventory tracking cannot be disabled.
  • The inventory item was added with "Inventory Tracked" option disabled and used in transactions already.

For inventory items that are not linked to QuickBooks Online (QBO) but have "Inventory Tracked" enabled, customers can disable this setting if desired.
