How to Determine the "Fully Burdened Hourly Cost"

The Fully Burdened Hourly Cost is basically a technician's hourly rate of pay plus any benefits, employer taxes, and retirement contributions. We use the this cost to display real-time profits in the work order as well as to determine past technician profitability in the Labor Hours report.

Most marinas and shipyards calculate the Fully Burdened Hourly Cost from the the "Total Cost" or "Total Expense" on each employee's internal/company-facing pay summary. If you don't have a number like that from your Payroll provider, you can sum together each employees' total pay in one month including any expenses not included in their paycheck total and divide that number by the total hours they worked in that month or pay period. At minimum, most marinas find this burden cost is 15-30% greater than the hourly rate you pay an employee. So a tech making $29/hour might have a burden cost as high as $37.70.

Here is an example. This is based on pretend data for ease of reading and is not representative of market pay or any real shipyard data.
